The original Herman Miller chair

The Eames original had the ottoman cushion loosely fitted and matched so that it could be swapped with the seat cushion of the chair. It was a practical design solution to ordinary wear and tear. Here, in the replica, it seems that the bases of the chair and the ottoman have been matched for mass production purposes. If one looks at the original Herman Miller chair, one notices that the bases are more solid in appearance, and that the chair has five supports, while the ottoman has four. The Aldi replica shows what looks like identical stands for each item – for simple economy?

Charles and Ray Eames

Charles and Ray Eames are known as one of the most important designers of the 20th century.

Charles Eames was born in 1907 June 17th, in St Louis Missouri. He started to study architecture in Washington University but never finished because the university dropped him out after two tears. In 1930 he had opened his first architectural firm on his own but later on he was offered a fellowship at the Cranbrook Academy where he became the head of the design department.

Ray Kaiser Eames was born December 15th 1912 in California. She studied painting with Hans Hoffman in New York City from 1933 to 1939. Later on she moved over to Cranbrook Academy where she met Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen. She assisted them in creating the ‘’Organic Chair’’ (1940). This chair was a small reading chair, it had a sculptural organic shape with a modern style. They won first place with chair.

They are officially titled Eames Lounge (670) and Ottoman (671) and were released in 1956 after years of development by designers. The Eames-style lounge and ottoman

I love mid-century anything and have been looking at the Eames chair and ottoman for a while. I know my husband also loves that style, so I thought it would be a nice chair for him to relax in.

The Eames chair and ottoman were designed by husband and wife team Charles and Ray

Eames back in 1956. Here is some info from Dwell:

Charles and Ray Eames often visited their friend Billy Wilder on his film sets. While working, the famed director would put together a makeshift lounge chair so that he could nap between takes. Something about his jerry-rigged seat struck a chord with the duo.The couple already had significant experience working with plywood.

Applying heat and pressure, Charles and Ray had molded it for use by the U.S. Navy during WWII. Following the war, they continued to experiment with the material. The resulting smooth curves of molded plywood on the Eames Lounge and Ottoman were unprecedented in furniture design at the time. The chair is upholstered in leather and has an aluminum base.
